Friday Film Fest: Stefan Zweig | Farewell to Europe

Fri. May. 19, 2017 - 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Come join us for another fabulous Friday Film Fest! Coffee, cake, and homemade soup will be served. Director Maria Schrader takes a new look at world-famous Jewish writer Stefan Zweig, who was born in Vienna in 1881. Zweig decided to flee the rise of the Nazis and leave his homeland for London in 1934. After a stopover in the US, he eventually settled in Brazil in 1942. He and his wife Lotte committed suicide there in the same year. Schrader’s film divides Zweig’s life in exile into a series of cinematic episodes, including his arrival in Buenos Aires, life in Bahia in northeastern Brazil, meeting his first wife in the US in 1941, and finally settling in Petropolis two hours north of Rio de Janeiro. The film will be shown in German with English subtitles.
