Konversationsabend: Feuerzangenbowle

Wed. Feb. 8, 2017 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Feuerzangenbowle mit Herta von der Gruen.    Herta has again volunteered to re-introduce us to a tradition that became most popular after Heinrich Spoerl’s bestseller Die Feuerzangenbowle (The Punch Bowl, 1933) and even more so after the film version with Heinz Ruehmann in 1944, then praised as a "masterpiece of timeless, cheerful escapism”. Those of you who remember E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novella “The Golden Pot” will know that it, like Spoerl’s story, was conceived during a hot punch session. Tradition has it, that everyone who participates in the punch bowl circle must tell a short amusing story while the punch is on fire. This is what we will do on Wednesday night. We hope you will bring your own favorite tale, but a short selection of jokes and anecdotes will be distributed.   This is also Carnival time – maybe, anyone who feels like it and can find some vintage clothing in the depths of his/her closet should dress up  for a “shabby chic” parade, then let us guess what year that outfit was fashionable and perhaps tell us a little story about it and why you kept it. This would be our very own KA Carnival with boom box music to go with it.   So, let’s brighten up the winter “doldrums” with a bit of punch and a laugh.   As always – all are invited, all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
