The Reopening of the Joseph Horner Memorial Library

The German Society is proud to announce the reopening of the
Joseph Horner Memorial Library, to its members and the public, this
fall.
In order to make these wonderful resources available to the public once
again, the Library Committee (a dedicated group of volunteers) has been
working diligently in setting goals and developing a fundraising
program for the resumption of our facility operations.
Once
the Library is reopened, the
Society intends to hold regular lectures, discussions and
tours in order to enhance the public understanding of German
culture.
Among the other goals are establishing a Residential Scholar
Program, continuing the cataloging of the German-American and Carl
Schurz collections, retrieving books from temporary storage that are
compatible with our collections, deaccessioning those that are not
pertinent to the other materials we possess and developing a
financial plan to sustain the Library's operation for the future.
The fundraising program will support the operation of the Libary. It will
also contribute to operational costs, such as utilities for the climate
control system, and provide internet data links to catalogs.
The goal for this program is $50,000.
There are two main ways we are encouraging both the German Society
membership and the public to support this treasured collection.
The first way is to download a Friends of the Joseph Horner Memorial Library donation form and choose your desired level of contribution.
The other way is by joining us at 4:00pm on Sunday, November 5 as we hold the grand, and official, Reopening of the Library Celebration.
The festivities will begin with a champagne reception followed by
two brief presentations by eminent historians. Then, Prof. Birte
Pfleger will present her 240-year history of the Society and Prof.
Kevin Ostoyich's compendium on the German-American
collection published by the German Historical Institute in
Washington, DC. (Each attendee will receive a complimentary
copy). The evening will conclude with a Recital of German Lieder in the Auditorium of the Society.
Tickets for this event are $50 per person and benefit the operations of the Library.
If you would like to attend, please send a check payable to the "German
Society of PA" with "Library Reopening" in the memo line.
