Scholarship Program 2008-2009

Please read all the information below carefully before applying.

Dear Students and Teachers of German,

We would like to announce the opening of the application process of the German Society's Scholarship Program for the upcoming academic year.

The scholarship award is intended to provide financial assistance to selected undergraduate students majoring in German language and literature.  Awards are based primarily on the student's achievement and promise, although financial need may also be considered.

The average awards in recent years have been about $2500, with the dollar amount and number of recipients varying from year to year.  The awards may be applied only to tuition, are paid in two installments at the beginnings of the fall and spring semesters, and are transmitted directly to the recipient's college or university upon certification of enrollment by that institution.  Students are expected to enroll in at least one German course during each semester for which they receive support.

Applicants must meet the following recipients:

 - Resident of the Greater Delaware Valley
 - Senior in high school intending to major in German, or a German major at one of the colleges or universities listed below.  (Double majors are also eligible.)

Schedule:

 - March 17 - Applications due at the German Society by 5:00pm
 - April 3 -      Notification of finalists
 - April 12 -    Interviews of finalists at the German Society
 - April 16 -    Notification of recipients
 - April 26 -    Announcement of the scholarship recipients at the AATG Awards Program at the German Society

The required application materials include:

 - Completed application form (download available below)
 - German writing sample, up to one typewritten page in length
 - Transcript from the most recent semester/year of school
 - Two letters of reference

The application and essay are to be submitted as MS Word or pdf attachments via email to the German Society.  The student may send the transcript via regular mail, or may have the school mail the transcript directly to the German Society.  At least one reference letter must be from a recent German teacher of the applicant.  The letters should be addressed to the Scholarship Committee, and may be submitted either via email or by regular mail.  Please use the email address printed on the application for all correspondence.

All materials must be received by 5:00pm on March 17, 2008.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.  (Note: This is not a postmark date.)

Please direct further questions to the German Society.  We thank you for your interest and commitment to German language and culture and wish you all the best for your school year.

Sincerely,
