This is an acclaimed Israeli-German coproduction about the highly talented “Konditor” Thomas from Berlin. He starts an affair with the Israeli business man Oren, who frequents his café and buys his delicious cookies on his professional trips to the German capital. When Oren dies in a car crash in Jerusalem, Thomas travels to Israel to seek answers about his death. He contacts Oren’s wife Anat who has opened a small café in Jerusalem without revealing his true identity and his relationship to Anat’s husband. Hired by Anat to wash the dishes, Thomas soon displays his talents as a baker with his German-style cookies and cakes, which in turn breathes life into Anat’s otherwise quiet café. Big orders from all over the city follow, attracted by Thomas’ creation of “Zimtkekse”, “Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte”, “Mandarinentorte”, “Mandeltorte”, and “Streusselkuchen” among many others. Things get complicated when Thomas and Anat have an affair and she starts to discover Thomas’ relationship to her deceased husband. The tensions between Anat and some of her more orthodox family members on the one hand and the strict regulations of the State’s kosher certification requirements on the other hand lead to an unexpected and unresolved open ending.
A slow and sensitive movie that thoughtfully explores the unique personal affairs of the protagonist as well as the complex and difficult German-Jewish relationships of the past and present.
