Screening of G.W. Pabst’s “Westfront 1918” with remarks by Dr. Jay B. Lockenour

Sun. Nov. 18, 2018 - 3:00pm - 5:30pm
We would like to invite you to a screening of the movie Westfront 1918, in remembrance of the centennial of the end of the First World War. The event will take place on Sunday, November 18 at 3pm, in the Society’s Horner Memorial Library. The movie will be in German with English subtitles.
Westfront 1918, directed by G.W. Pabst, came out in 1930 and was the first German anti-war film – but it was overshadowed from the start by the release, later that same year, of the big Hollywood adaptation of the international bestseller All Quiet on the Western Front. Now you will get a chance to rediscover G.W. Pabst’s film, with its strong ensemble cast, brilliantly extended, existential battle scenes, and creative sound editing.
In addition to showing the movie, we’re delighted to also offer introductory remarks by Dr. Jay B. Lockenour, Associate Professor of History at Temple University and current chair of the History Department there. Dr. Lockenour received a B.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. His work is unified by an interest in the intersection of social and military history and especially in the social and cultural impact of warfare in Europe. He has worked on a wide range of subjects, from German political culture and national identity, to POW and veterans’ affairs, to the role of film in illuminating historical consciousness. He is the author of Soldiers as Citizens: Former Wehrmacht Officers in the Federal Republic of Germany, 1945-1955 (University of Nebraska Press, 2001), and his completed manuscript Dragonslayer: The Legend of Erich Ludendorff in the Weimar Republic and Beyond is currently under review at Cornell University Press.
We hope you will be able to join us for this commemorative gathering honoring the Armistice and the memory of all the suffering of soldiers and civilians alike during the war. This event is free and open to the public.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
