Alexander von Humboldt’s 250th Birthday Celebration at the Humboldt Monument

Sat. Sep. 14, 2019 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
You're invited to celebrate the 250th birthday of Alexander von Humboldt on Saturday, September 14 from 2:00pm-3:00pm at the foot of his monument on Martin Luther King Drive in West Fairmount Park!
Join the German Society of Pennsylvania in celebrating the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt’s birth! We will have a professional photo taken of the birthday party, hear about the history of the monument, hear music by GSP member and bassoonist Chuck Holdeman and clarinetist Antonello di Matteo, including some music from the 1869 celebration, and we will have a champagne toast. There will also be a life-sized image of Humboldt with a face cut-out. You can step into his shoes so to speak and have your picture taken.
Directions: Martin Luther King Drive is closed to car traffic on weekends during the summer months. However, there is a park ranger on Montgomery Drive very close to where it runs into MLK Drive. The ranger will let you pass if you explain where you wish to go and why. Turn right on MLK Drive and you will find the monument and a parking lot on your left after a short distance. You can also bike to the monument or walk from the top of Black Road. There is parking for the Please Touch Museum and the Kelly Pool. From there it is about a ¼ mile walk to the monument, which is just to the right from where Black Road connects to MLK Drive.
Tickets are not required, but please inform the German Society office if you plan to attend by calling 215-627-2332 or emailing info@germansociety.org. In the case of inclement weather, we will communicate cancellation by noon on September 14 via our website and social media.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
