KA EXTRA: William Penn’s “Fruits of Solitude” – What the Founder of Philadelphia still has to tell us today – with Prof. Juergen Overhoff

Mon. Apr. 23, 2018 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
We have the pleasure to welcome again Prof. Juergen Overhoff from the University of Muenster, Germany on Monday, April 23, at 7pm. Many of us know him well from previous visits. In one of his presentations he compared Friedrich II. of Prussia and George Washington and their very different approach to Enlightenment views on good government. Another unforgettable talk was on Montesquieu and his concept of the separation of powers and the advantages of a confederate system inspired by his travels in Germany.
As part of our KA Extra Series, Prof. Overhoff will introduce us to an aspect of William Penn’s personality that to many of us is less known than his role as founder of the city of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania. Not only did he propagate a multi-confessional and tolerant society in the Quaker tradition, but had a lot to say about friendship, marriage, education, the art of conversation, in short how to lead a successful and meaningful life.
And so the topic of this evening will be William Penn’s “Fruits of Solitude“: What the founder of Philadelphia still has to tell us today. These thoughts and reflections of Penn are available in a new translation into German introduced and commented by Prof. Overhoff. For this book Prof. Overhoff has received several awards and we appreciate the opportunity to learn about “the other William Penn“. This promises to be another informative and most enjoyable evening with Prof. Overhoff.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
