Konversationsabend: Feldmarschall Graf Josef von Radetzky with Hans Mueller

Wed. Mar. 13, 2019 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Our March meeting will take place on Wednesday, the 13th, 6 pm, as always in the Ratskeller at the German Society.
This evening, our attention will focus on Austria. Hans Mueller from the Executive Committee will present the life and career of a once most influential and still popular Austrian “hero”, Field Marshal Graf Josef von Radetzky. Graf von Radetzky was a Czech aristocrat who joined the Austrian army as a young man and soon made a name for himself as a brilliant war strategist.
He fought in all major European wars during his long career, including the Austrian-Turkish war, the French revolutionary wars, the Napoleonic wars, and the Italian wars of independence. In 1848 he was made Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia, the first time this title did not go to a member of the imperial Habsburg family. In the years after the 1848 revolutions, he secured Lombardy-Venetia for Austria, and died in 1858, age 91, just one year before this kingdom was recaptured by Italy in 1859 and became part of the Italian Unification in 1870.
His legendary life made him extremely popular. Radetzky Monuments were erected at numerous places, and we will certainly play the famous Radetzky-March Johann Strauss Sr. composed in his honor.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
