Dear Members and Friends of the German Society, Please join us for a Horner Memorial Library virtual program that will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the early German settlement of Pennsylvania. At 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, join us for a virtual book launch of The Word in the Wilderness: Popular Piety and the Manuscript Arts in Early Pennsylvania by Alexander Lawrence Ames, recently published by the Pennsylvania State University Press. Advance registration is required; please email gsplibrarian@gmail.com to register and receive a link to the virtual Zoom event. The Word in the Wilderness presents a fascinating reinterpretation of the beloved art of Pennsylvania German manuscript illumination, better-known as “fraktur.”  The book explores the complex spiritual underpinnings of the artworks and proposes new strategies for interpreting their meaning as artifacts of early American religious history.  Learn more about the book at www.wordinwilderness.com. Participants in the book launch will be sent a special code to receive a 40% discount on the book when they order it directly from Penn State Press.  Please RSVP by July 17.  For more information, see the e-invitation below.
