Six scholars awarded with German Society scholarship

Philadelphia, Pa. – The German Society of Pennsylvania hosted the annual American Association of Teachers of German Award Ceremony on April 26, 2026, welcoming nearly 190 students, educators, families and community members to celebrate excellence in German language studies and academic achievement.

During the ceremony, held at the Society’s historic headquarters at 611 Spring Garden Street, the German Society of Pennsylvania awarded six scholarships to outstanding students from across the Greater Delaware Valley who have demonstrated dedication to the study of German language and culture.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Liliana DeFeo, Daphne Challingsworth, Sophia Lawless, Maya Hartung, Lily Juska and Carson Weaver.

The German Society of Pennsylvania congratulates all recipients and wishes them continued success as they pursue their higher education journeys.

Scholarships are awarded annually to qualified high school seniors planning to major or minor in German, as well as current college students enrolled at approved regional institutions.

Eligible applicants must reside within designated counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware and submit an application package that includes:

  • A completed application form,
  • A German writing sample,
  • Official academic transcripts,
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from a recent German teacher.

Applicants are also interviewed, largely in German, as part of the selection process.

The next scholarship application deadline is scheduled for March 2027.
