Please read the information below very carefully before applying. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
We would like to announce the opening of the application process of the German Society's Scholarship Program for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Deadline for submission: March 14, 2019 at 5:00pm
The scholarship award is intended to provide financial assistance primarily to selected undergraduate students majoring in German language and literature, although those minoring in German will also be considered. Awards are based primarily on the student's achievement and promise, although financial need may also be considered. The average awards in recent years have been about $2,500, with the dollar amount and number of recipients varying from year to year. The awards may be applied only to tuition, are paid in two installments at the beginnings of the fall and spring semesters, and are transmitted directly to the recipient's college or university upon certification of enrollment by that institution.
Students are expected to enroll in at least one German course during each semester for which they receive support.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Resident of the Greater Delaware Valley (see list of counties below)
Senior in high school intending to major in German at college, or
German major or minor at one of the colleges or universities listed below (double majors are also eligible)

The required application materials include:
- Completed application form (see download at top of page)
- German writing sample, up to one typewritten page in length
- Transcript from the most recent semester/year of school (College freshmen should submit both high school and college transcripts)
- Two letters of reference (preferably on school letterhead stationery if from a teacher)
The application and essay are to be submitted electronically as file attachments by the student to the German Society. Transcripts and reference letters should be mailed or FAXed directly to the German Society, by the school or the writer of the letter (address below). At least one reference letter MUST be from a recent German teacher of the applicant.
The letters should be addressed to the Scholarship Committee, and may be submitted either electronically or by mail.
If you are a previous award recipient, you must re-apply for the scholarship. It does not automatically renew from year to year.
The application and essay must be received by 5:00p.m. on March 14, 2019. Transcripts and reference letters must be either FAXed or postmarked by the same date. Incomplete applications will not be considered. We strongly recommend that applicants confirm the receipt of their materials by calling or emailing the Society's office several days before the due date.
Although both majors and minors will be considered, students pursuing German as a major will be given preference.
Applicants who are chosen for an interview are typically expected to ensure that they will be available for an interview at the German Society on the scheduled date. Students who are already studying overseas may request a Skype interview.
Please direct further questions to the German Society. We thank you for your interest in and commitment to the German language and culture and wish you the best for your school year.
