Deadline for submission: March 8, 2022 at 5:00pm

We are pleased to announce the opening of the application process of the German Society’s Scholarship Program for the upcoming academic year. The scholarship award is intended to provide financial assistance to selected undergraduate students studying German language and literature. Awards are based primarily on the student’s achievement and promise, although financial need may also be considered. Typical awards in recent years have been $2,000 to $3,000, with the dollar amount and number of recipients varying from year to year. The awards may be applied only to tuition, are paid in two installments at the beginnings of the fall and spring semesters, and are transmitted directly to the recipient’s college or university upon certification of enrollment by that institution. Students are expected to enroll in at least one German course during each semester for which they receive support.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Resident of the Greater Delaware Valley (see list of counties below)
- Senior in high school intending to major in German at college, OR
- German major or minor at one of the colleges or universities listed below (double majors are also eligible)

- Completed application form (see download at top of page)
- German writing sample, up to one typewritten page in length
- Transcript including the most recent semester (College freshmen should submit both high school and college transcripts. A student who has transferred to his/her current college should also submit transcripts from prior colleges.)
- Two letters of reference, preferably on school letterhead stationery if from a teacher

The application and essay are to be submitted electronically as file attachments by the student to the German Society. Transcripts and reference letters should be mailed or FAXed directly to the German Society, by the school or the writer of the letter (address below). At least one reference letter must be from a recent German teacher of the applicant.

The letters should be addressed to the Scholarship Committee, and may be submitted either electronically or by mail.

If you are a previous award recipient, you must re-apply for the scholarship. It does not automatically renew from year to year.

The application and essay must be received by 5:00 p.m. on March 8, 2022. Transcripts and reference letters must be either FAXed or postmarked by the same date.
Incomplete applications will not be considered. We strongly recommend that applicants confirm the receipt of their materials by calling or emailing the Society's office several days before the due date.

Although both majors and minors will be considered, students pursuing German as a major will be given preference.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we expect that interviews will be conducted via the online video conferencing platform, Zoom. Applicants should be able to access Zoom prior to the interview. The German Society will provide the applicant with the Zoom link and access code at the appropriate time. The interviews are conducted primarily in German.

Please direct further questions to the German Society. We thank you for your interest in and commitment to the German language and culture and wish you the best for your school year.
