Brown Bag Lunch Lecture by Mary Le Gierse: Pedagogies of Nature in Goethe’s “Wilhelm Meister” and the “Erziehungslehre” of Friedrich Heinrich Christian Schwarz

We are delighted to invite you to our next lecture on Tuesday, February 5, at 12pm. In order to minimize potential weather disruptions, this will be a daytime event, taking the format of a Brown Bag Lunch and therefore located in the Ratskeller, not the Library. Our speaker will be Mary Le Gierse, and her topic is “Pedagogies of Nature in Goethe's Wilhelm Meister and the Erziehungslehre of Friedrich Heinrich Christian Schwarz”. This lecture will highlight the influence of several core pedagogical principles from Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre on the Erziehungslehre of Friedrich Heinrich Christian Schwarz. The Erziehungslehre is a comprehensive, multi-volume treatise for parents and teachers of early nineteenth-century young people. In it, Schwarz combines a complex theory of education with practical guidelines for the instruction of subjects such as math, physics, economics, and literature.
Ms. Le Gierse completed her Ph.D. in German Studies at Washington University in St. Louis in 2017. Her dissertation examines the legacy of Baruch Spinoza’s Ethics in Goethe’s Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. Ms. Le Gierse enjoys exploring the connections between the arts and sciences in eighteenth-century literature. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Washington University and has taught European literature of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in several Women’s Studies seminars. She has been involved with the German Society of Pennsylvania since her sophomore year of high school, has been a Women’s Auxiliary scholarship recipient, and proudly served the German-American community of Philadelphia as Cornflower Queen in college.
