Lecture by Beer Historian Rich Wagner: Breweries of the Northern Liberties

Wed. May. 2, 2018 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
This is a reminder to join us on Wednesday, May 2nd at 7pm for an interesting lecture on the Breweries of Northern Liberties by noted Pennsylvania Brewery  Historian Rich Wagner. Explore the rich brewing heritage of Philadelphia's Northern Liberties neighborhood which dates back to the days before the Revolution. Home to both the nation’s first porter brewery and birthplace of lager beer brewing in America, Northern Liberties has been home to over one hundred breweries throughout its history. Names like Ortlieb’s, Betz, and Erlanger may be familiar to some old timers, but names like Binder, Biederbeck & Schmidheiser, John Jacob Wolf, and Muellerschoen hearken back to pre-prohibition days, while Rudman’s Eagle Brewery, Robert Smith, and Robert Hare recall the early days when Philadelphia was renowned as an ale brewing center. Pennsylvania Brewery Historian Rich Wagner has spoken with brewers and brewery owners, researched industrial census data and combed insurance maps, atlases, city directories as well as brewer’s daybooks to tell the story of the brewers and breweries of Northern Liberties, illustrated with photographs, ads, breweriana and more. This lecture is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
