Konversationsabend: 30 Jahre Mauerfall – Joachim Gaucks Suche nach der Einheit. Ein Filmabend mit Karl Moehlmann.

Wed. Nov. 13, 2019 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
The 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall is approaching, and we have the pleasure to welcome Karl Moehlmann who will lead us through an evening of remembrance and discussion. He will show the film "30 Years after the Fall of the Wall - Joachim Gauck's Journey through Germany." The quest for unity, the "flourishing landscapes" envisioned by then Chancellor Helmut  Kohl, "the coming together of what belongs together" so emphatically welcomed by Willy Brandt - did all this happen or do we now look at a country with two souls?
The former Bundespraesident Joachim Gauck, one of the key figures of the "Peaceful Revolution" that preceded the reunification, traveled through Germany to see for himself. He spoke with public figures like Lothar de Maiziere, the last Prime Minister of the GDR, Marianne Birthler, human rights advocate and politician of the Alliance '90/The Greens, Pegida co-founder René Jahn, Frauke Petry, former chairperson of the AFD,  Wolfgang Schäuble, longterm Minister of Finance, CDU, the writer Navid Kermani and many others.
The fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent vanishing of an entire state, followed by the unique fusion of two very different political systems and the end of the Cold War - there are few events in recent history of comparable importance for European stability and world peace. For Germans it was a dream come true, an unprecedented national challenge, but also a job quite well done - or isn't it?
Refreshments will be served.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
