Konversationsabend: Karl Marx Resurrected?

Wed. Nov. 14, 2018 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Our upcoming meeting will take place on November 14 at 6 pm  in the Ratskeller at the German Society. We will remember one of the most influential German philosophers, Karl Marx, born two hundred years ago, in 1818, whose ideas – for better or worse - bridged the gap between theory and practice and changed the world, changed history. However, while Marx’s ideas appeared fascinating not only to intellectuals but also to the masses, applied Marxism resulted in bloody revolutions and the creation of highly repressive political regimes. Most of them disappeared from the world stage during the late eighties and early nineties. A few survived, the most powerful of them being the People’s Republic of China. But with the break-up of the Soviet Union, many believed that Capitalism had won the contest. Things became quiet around Marx and Marxism.
However, with the severe economic crisis of 2008, the focus returned to Karl Marx, the philosopher and economist. Was he not the one who had predicted that Capitalism on account of its inherent nature would drive the world from crisis to crisis? Until finally it would not be able to resurrect itself and would be replaced by a different system? All of a sudden, Marx was back in talk shows, movies were made, new books on his theory were published, new editions of his works appeared, leading newspapers published entire sections on Marx’s theory of economics, the One Percent movements carried posters announcing and demanding the end of Capitalism (maybe a bit too soon). Then, what is it that Marx has to tell us today?  Let us find out next week.
Last but not least, in conjunction with the Konversationsabend, Allen Krumm and Karl Moehlmann will show a wonderful biographical movie on Karl Marx on Friday, November 16, 6:30 pm. Our KA session will do, in an way, the preparation for a better understanding of the movie and the movie will be an enlightening illustration of the KA discussion.
As always – all are invited, all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
All of our events are open to the public.
We welcome members and non-members alike.
